Luxury Rehab: What It Should Mean
This page is written for the person doing the research rather than the person who has already decided. It is deliberately not a brochure. If you are comparing private clinics, in Europe or further afield, these are the things that actually differ between them, and the questions that separate a treatment centre from a hotel with a therapist on call.
We run a small clinic in Spain, so we are not a neutral party. We have still tried to write the page we wish had existed when the people who come to us were searching.
What you are paying for, and what you are not
Private treatment at this level costs somewhere between fifteen and forty thousand euros for a month, sometimes considerably more. Very little of that difference is explained by the building.
What genuinely costs money is staffing: how many clinicians are on site, what they are qualified in, and how many clients they are dividing their attention between. A clinic with ten residents and a full clinical team is a different product from one with sixty residents and the same team, even if the photographs look similar.
What does not change the outcome is the thread count. It is pleasant, and for someone who has been living in chaos a beautiful room genuinely helps them sleep, but it is not treatment.
Seven questions worth asking any clinic
Ask these on the first call. The hesitation in the answers tells you as much as the answers.
- How many clients are in residence at one time, today, not at capacity?
- How many hours of individual therapy will I have each week, with a named therapist?
- What are the qualifications of the person who will lead my treatment?
- Is medical detox included, and is a doctor on site or on call at night?
- What happens in the four months after I leave, and is it included in the price?
- Which authority licenses the clinic, and under what registration?
- What would make you tell me I am not the right fit for you?
The last one matters most. A clinic that has never turned anyone away is selling beds.
Where private treatment is offered, and what changes with geography
The main destinations for English speaking clients are Spain and Portugal, Switzerland and Austria, South Africa and Thailand, alongside domestic options in the United Kingdom.
Language. You will be doing difficult psychological work. Doing it in your second language, or through a translator, costs you something real. Check that therapy itself is in your language, not just reception.
Travel. A long flight matters more than people expect, both on arrival and for family visits. Southern Europe is a two to three hour flight from most of the United Kingdom and the Nordics.
Regulation. Requirements for private clinics differ significantly between countries. Ask which authority licenses the clinic and for the registration under which it operates. We are licensed in Spain as a healthcare provider and will give you our registration details on request.
Climate and season. Not a clinical factor, with one exception: light. Sleep and mood are the first two things a programme has to restore, and daylight helps both.
What we offer, in brief
A ten room clinic in El Paraíso, minutes from the beach and a short drive from Marbella. Ten clients at most. Programmes of 14, 28 and 56 days, with medically supervised detox in the 28 day programme and four months of individual aftercare with a case manager afterwards. Therapy runs in English, and we also have staff who speak Swedish, Spanish, Arabic and Albanian.
We treat addiction to alcohol, cocaine, ketamine and prescribed medication, behavioural addiction including Sexsucht, and we treat depression, anxiety, burnout, trauma and eating disorders. We do not take clients under eighteen, and there are conditions we refer elsewhere rather than accept.

Frequently asked questions
Is luxury rehab more effective than standard treatment?
Not because it is luxurious. It is more effective when the small resident numbers buy you more individual therapy and continuity with one therapist, which is what the price should be buying.
How much does private rehab cost?
Roughly fifteen to forty thousand euros for a month in Europe. Ask what is included, particularly detox and aftercare, because that is where quoted prices diverge most.
Is treatment abroad confidential?
It is usually more so than treatment at home, simply because nobody you know is nearby. Ask specifically what is shared with insurers and employers, and require that it be in writing.
Can family visit or take part?
At most clinics yes, and family sessions are part of a good programme. Check how far the clinic is from an airport if visits matter to you.
How long should I go for?
Long enough to get through withdrawal and into therapeutic work. Twenty eight days is the common standard for that reason. Fourteen days can stabilise a situation but rarely changes it.
What if I cannot take a month away from work?
Then say so at assessment. A clinic that adapts the clinical plan to your calendar without comment is telling you something about how it makes decisions.
